Choosing a Contractor

Home

Not all roofing contractors are the same.  So how is a consumer to choose?  Ultimately the decision is yours, but if you follow some basic guidelines and arm yourself with knowledge, your decision can be made with confidence.

bullet

Do deal only with licensed contractors.  Verify a contractor's license status by contacting the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) at 1-800-321-CSLB or www.cslb.ca.gov.

bullet

Do verify that your contractor is properly insured.  With the recent changes in the insurance industry this is more important than ever.  Ask to see a copy of your contractor's current Certificate of Insurance.

bullet

Do require a written contract and don't sign it until you fully understand the terms.

bullet

Do know how much to give as a deposit.  Under state law, when undertaking a home improvement or repair job, a contractor cannot require a deposit of more than 10% of the total cost of the job or $1000, whichever is less - unless the contractor provides a bond, approved bond equivalent, or approved joint control ensuring completion of your contract.

bullet

Do request the state required "Homeowner's Checklist".  Effective February 2002, SB 2029 dictates that a checklist identifying what a consumer should consider when evaluating a home improvement contractor must be provided with every bid and contract.

bullet

Do ask for client references.  The best contractors are those whose clients would recommend them to others.
